Perstwick airport first opened as a grass airport on the 1st May 1935. It stayed as a grass airport until the 1st October 1941when it opened as an airport with a runway. The main runway is 31 and in 1952/53 a short runway was built. The main runway used to cross the main road at the beach end and traffic on the main road used to be stopped to allow the planes to land or take off.

Prestwick is a CAT 7 airport and can be upgraded to CAT 9 by bringing in 3 staff to man the spare appliance which takes on the call sign FIRE 6. Each watch has eleven staff, with a minimum of nine on duty to man the appliances
FIRE 2 3 (Watch Commander +2)
FIRE 3 3 (Sub + 2)
FIRE 4 2 (Watchroom attendant + his relief)
FIRE 7 1 (L/Ff)
In the event of a fire in the Terminal building Fire 7 is sent to investigate along with Fire 3, they will deal with the incident until the arrival of the Local Authority Brigade when they will hand over the incident to them as their primary concern is the aircraft and if they stay to deal with the fire the Category of the airport has to be downgraded and a NOTAM issued resulting in a pilot having to decide to land with reduced fire cover or divert to another airport.
