WHITEINCH FIRE BRIGADE

1895 Handbarrow with hose, ladder etc.
Notes
The brigade consisted of:-
James Hardie the plumber
Sandy MacArthur the carpenter
Mic Cochrane the joiner
I've had a closer look at the old maps of
the area that I have. On the 1895 one, it shows the "Fire Engine Station" at the
corner of what was then Oswald Street and George Street (now Inchlee Street and
Medwyn Street). However, by 1915, it doesn't show any name. The building was
behind Whiteinch Lesser Burgh Hall, which was built in 1893.
The handwritten history I mentioned, states that Whiteinch had " a small fire
brigade which consisted of James Hardie, the plumber, Sandy MacArthur the
carpenter and Mic Cochrane, the joiner, with a handbarrow containing the hose
and ladder etc." Whether this would be the same firemen who used the building I
mentioned, I have no idea. Presumably though, in 1895, the fire station would
have been part of Partick Burgh. The building beside the fire station was also a
police station.
