FIRE INVESTIGATION UNIT

As far as I am aware there are only three Fire Investigation Units (FIU) based at Dyce, Livingston and Yorkhill Fire Stations. One was inherited from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service, one from Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service and one from Grampian Fire and Rescue Service. The Unit at Yorkhill has two vehicles in case they are at an investigation and if another incident occurs they can dispatch another team to the second incident.

The FIUs attend any fire that involves fatalities or serious injuries or where the fire happened under suspicious circumstances.

They take statements from firefighters who were in the first attendance and any witnesses. Try to establish the source of the fire and spread. Take forensic evidence and samples and any exhibits which might be required in a Court of Law. They are also trained in how to present any exhibits and give evidence in a Court of Law.
