Captain Drummond died after a prolonged illness on 19th August, 1894.

DEATH OF CAPTAIN OF FIRE BRIGADE – Our readers will regret to learn of the death of Mr David Drummond, master joiner, and Captain of the fire brigade, which took place yesterday. It is only some twelve months since Mr Drummond was appointed to the responsible position of Captain of the fire brigade. He was greatly respected, both by the firemen and his employees. The first important charge that he was called upon to undertake was in the early part of the year, when, during the time of the great floods, the chemical works at the shore took fire, his efforts to subdue the flames there were very successful and his business like manner was greatly admired. On returning home, it will be remembered, he was one of the occupants of the vehicle that capsized, and he got a severe drenching; and from that time there has been a perceptible change in his health. The last occasion on which he captained his men was a month or two ago, when he had to cope with the flames in Mr Hardie’s shop in George Street, and in the dwelling house in Princes Street, at which latter place the town crier lost his life. Ever since then he has been laid aside from active business. Only a few days ago a telephone was fitted in his house, having direct communication with the Police Office, where there has also been placed a special apparatus which has a connection with the whole of the firemen’s houses. Being only 48 years of age, he was what may have been termed in the prime of life, and much sympathy is expressed for his wife and family.

With the passing away of Mr David Drummond, Captain of the Fire Brigade, the Police Commissioners will in a few days be called upon to appoint a successor in his stead. No doubt there are many men in the city who will be putting forward their claims. In the matter of the brigade, the Commissioners, it may be stated, are adopting a forward movement, having adapted the plan followed in other large centres, viz., of having an electric apparatus fitted up at the Police Office, which can instantaneously summon the members of the brigade to their headquarters.
