Unit formed about 1948? After serious house fire.
With the new brigade structure introduced in the summer of 2003 the 3 Divisions were re-organised into 2 Commands North and South, Shieldaig was put into North Command. Call signs remained the same.
Apparently a site has been purchased at Annat. ( This could mean amalgamation of Torridon and Shieldaig into 1 mobile unit ? )
In the 2002 Report by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Fire Services for Scotland he said the Brigade could be covered by 95 Units and finance would only be given for those 95. Shieldaig is one of the 32 units which is now under threat of closure.
In the Integrated Risk Management Planning Draft Review of the 32 'Non Strategic' Units it is recommended that
the amalgamation of the Torridon and Shieldaig units continues, providing a greatly enhanced lifesaving capability in the area. The expectation of the communities in that area is that there will be one fire station which will serve all of the immediate locale. On completion, the unit will be equipped with Breathing Apparatus and Road Traffic Accident equipment, to enable the Brigade to meet the risks identified within the immediate Shieldaig and Torridon area.As of 1st April 2005 the unit at Shieldaig was amalgamated with the unit at Torridon. Only one person from Shieldaig went to the unit at Torridon which is now a Retained unit with a Light Fire Appliance.
