Notes
There is a mural on the front of the building at the left hand side showing a tractor, a cow and factories depicting the coming together of of the town and country as at that time Sighthill was out in the country.
In 1980 the Establishment was 1 Station Officer, 1 Sub Officer, 2 Leading Firemen and 12 Firemen per watch (4 watches).
Sighthill had a call sign of 31 in Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, this was changed to K06, the new National Call Sign on 3/5/2017.
June 2021 The Scottish Ambulance Service have a co-location at Sighthill Fire Station.
NEW SIGHTHILL FIRE STATION OPENS TODAY
Edinburgh’s first suburban fire station, at Calder Road, Sighthill, was to be
officially opened this afternoon by Lord Provost J. G. Dunbar. The new station
is the forerunner of several that are proposed to serve the new districts.
The building, carried out by the
Edinburgh City Architect’s Department, was completed in just over a year.
In planning the new station, a careful study was made of the operational
inter-relation of rooms, and the layout is the result of close co-operation
between the Department and the Firemaster.
The nerve centre of the new station is the watch room on the ground floor. It is
situated in the angle between the muster hall and the appliance room, with
observation windows to both these rooms and giving a clear view of the
forecourt. All equipment and controls are incorporated in a console in this
room.
SLIDING POLE
The central panel comprises
chronometer, telephone switchboard, and switch panel for remote control of
electrically operated doors, lighting, alarm bells, appliance indicator lights,
and master push button. The wing panels contain, on one side, automatic fire
alarm systems with provision for future extension, and, on the other, amplifier
control unit and street index system.
The dormitory accommodation is located on the first floor above the muster hall,
to which there is sliding pole access.
The tower, which is separated from the main block of the fire station by a clear
area of drill yards, serves a double function for exercise and training purposes
and for hose drying.
The breathing apparatus room has additional heating by infrared heaters to
produce high temperature conditions for training purposes.

Sighthill to retain fire engine
Lothian and Borders Fire Board
yesterday decided to reverse a previous decision to transfer fire engine from
Sighthill fire station, Edinburgh, to a station being built at Liberton, after
being told by a deputation from the Fire Brigades Union that the move would mean
too great a risk for the Sighthill area.
Mr John Cunningham, the Scottish area secretary of the union, told the board in
Edinburgh that taking away one of the two pump units would reduce fire cover in
the Sighthill and Wester Hailes areas, and produce too long a delay in getting a
second appliance to the scene of a fire.
Mr James Anderson, the Firemaster, said that if cuts had to be made in the fire
service, another alternative would be to take men from all over the city to man
the new station, and to keep in service a fire appliance that was due to be
scrapped.
The board decided that Sighthill’s two fire engines should be maintained and
that they should seek a meeting with the Scottish Home and Health Department to
discuss opening Liberton as an operational fire station.

Key projects in crisis
Emergency service projects are having
to be shelved because of lack of Government cash, it was claimed today.
In Lothian and Borders, the fire brigade has put back a scheme to replace its
appliances until 1994-95 – when the machines will be 15 years old.
Difficult
The report says there are also worries
that an essential plan to upgrade Sighthill fire station will not now be
completed on time and new training facilities have also been delayed.
