The Wholetime pump is a Water Tender Ladder/Emergency Tender. The first Retained Pump is a Water Tender (which is the second appliance) and the second retained Pump is a Water Tender Ladder as it would normally go out as a first if the other two were at a job. The first retained pump is hopefully to get cutting gear soon. (June 2003)
Station got a wholetime crew in January 1963.
In the Integrated Risk Management Plan 2005/2010 the third Pump is to be removed. (May 2006).
Hawick had a call sign of 35 in Lothian and Borders Fire and Rescue Service, this was changed to J04, the new National Call Sign on 3/5/2017.
HISTORY OF HAWICK FIRE BRIGADE
I don’t have the first 6 pages or the ones following page 7.
Page7
provide whole time firemen in Hawick.
As the Station premises in Commercial Road had to receive considerable
alterations, the whole time firemen did not take up duty until January, 1963,
when one Station Officer, two Sub Officers and three firemen were transferred
from Edinburgh to form the whole time unit. The Station strength is now one
Station Officer, three Sub Officers, three Leading Firemen and fifteen Firemen;
there are also fourteen part time Firemen available.
The Station appliances consist of one Bedford Water Tender, 1964, one Dennis
Water Tender, 1969, and one Dennis Water Tender, 1970, with 45 ft. ladder. Those
machines carry 400 gallons of water each and have a pumping capacity of 2,350
gallons per minute between them each appliance having a built in pump producing
500 gallons per minute, two portable pumps of 250 gallons and one of 350
gallons.
As the Fire Station at Commercial Road was no longer suitable for whole time
personnel and modern firefighting appliances, work was started on building new
premises at Wilton Hill in March, 1969.
THE NEW HAWICK FIRE STATION
Continued on the next page which I don’t have.
Slitrig Bank with its imposing three-storey block of early 19th century flats
facing the Slitrig Water and beyond them is the former fire station. The fire
service for Hawick, using horsedrawn tenders, was provided from this building.
Records show a fire engine was purchased for the town in 1809. The arched
entrance - with a roundel window above - is now blocked up, but still visible.
The fire station moved to Commercial Road in 1910, and then to its current
location at Wilton Hill in the 1970s.
