RNAD Coulport. The Polaris program was instigated in 1963 and became operational in 1968. There was no effective fire cover for the base, the service there consisting of untrained fire patrolmen and 2 convoy vans which can only be described as defunct. It was decided in 1977 to establish an operational fire service there. I was appointed and posted to Coulport on 14 March 1977 as an ADO. The task was to set up and create a service within 1 year. I was stationed there from that date until Nov. 1979.
