New Fire Station at Bowmore
WILL SERVE ALL ISLAY

To serve the whole of Islay, a new fire station was officially opened at Bowmore on May 19 by Dr J. W. Macfarlane, chairman of the Western Area Fire Brigade Joint Committee.
In the unavoidable absence of Mr J. G. Mathieson, the convener of the county, Mr E. F. Wyatt, the vice convener, was chairman at the ceremony, having been introduced by Mr Ian A. Macfarlane, the local member of the County Council.
In inviting Dr Macfarlane to declare the fire station open the chairman explained that Argyll County Council, as a constituent member of the joint committee considered that the provision of these up to date facilities which would serve the whole of Islay, should be marked in an appropriate manner.
Dr Macfarlane recalled the history of fire brigade administration since the pre-war days and made reference to the present administrative arrangement which he said was a most happy one and one in which the interests of the Argyll area were satisfactorily served. He paid tribute to the services most willingly and efficiently given by the local fire brigade for whose use he formally declared the new premises open.
Mr Reid,  for the Scottish Tarmacadam and Asphalte co. Ltd., the principal contractor, presented Dr Macfarlane with a gift from all the contractors, while Mr Alastair C. Macrae, chairman of Islay District Council, thanked Dr Macfarlane on behalf of the community.
The platform party included members and officials of the Western Area Fire Brigade Joint Committee and of Argyll County Council.
Members of the public had an opportunity of inspecting the new premises and equipment after the opening ceremony.
