B.A. set
The Scarnish Appliance carries 4 BA sets and there is a spare set at the station and ten
spare cylinders. The BA cylinders have to be recharged at Coll. Two of the sets are
Scarnish's and the other two are Balemartines. Any fire call on the Island is attended by
both units. If the fire is at the Balemartine end then they go to the hut and get their
gear and proceed to the fire and tackle it until the appliance from Scarnish arrives. If
it is at the Scarnish end the Scarnish appliance goes to the fire and the Balemartine crew
go straight to the fire.
About 2 years after the Policeman's 11 month old daughter, (Morrison, went to Cardross as a
policeman) was killed in a fire, a machine was put on the island and kept in a garage on
the end of the Scarnish Hotel until the garage next to the Police station was built.
Gillian Irene Morrison, aged 11 months, died 6th May 1978.
Before the machine arrived the airport used to send their Bedford 800 WrT to fires on the island and the volunteers made their way to the fire.
17/6/2010 In the Oban Times planning permission is being applied for at Scarnish Fire Garage, Isle of Tiree for provision of dignified facilities comprising:- new cabin located adjacent to existing fire garage to house WC/Shower, fire kit storage/drying room, BA storage and office facilities.
About 2011 the unit at Balemartine combined with Scarnish and the hut was moved from Balemartine to Scarnish where it is kept beside their station.
2014 This unit now has Hydraulic cutting equipment (Combi Tool). Don't know when received.
When the new call signs were being implemented in the WEST SDA over a 7 week period beginning 31/8/2020 doing 1 LSO Area per week, Scarnish was changed from L60 to E73.
