Official Opening of Port Charlotte Volunteer unit.

Joined by local councillors and members of the community on Islay, Strathclyde Regional Council's Convener, Councillor W. Perry JP, opened the new Port Charlotte Fire Station earlier this year.
The station is the second purpose built as part of the Brigade's volunteer upgrading programme. It is an essential contribution to the protection of the island's population and an example of of the Region's commitment to improving services in remote rural and island communities.
The chair of the Police and Fire Committee, Councillor James Jennings, JP, welcomed the guests who included  the Region's Deputy Chief Executive  Assistant Firemaster Martin and the Commander of North Command SDO Clenaghan then invited the Convener to carry out the official opening. A dedication of the Unit was conducted by the Brigade Chaplin, the Rev Peter Houston. In his closing remarks Firemaster Jameson thanked the Region for their continued support and expressed his concern in securing similar support and investment within the forthcoming unitary authorities.
The new Port Charlotte station replaces the temporary accommodation at Clyne's garage, which housed the Volunteer Support Unit. The volunteer unit was first formed at Portnahaven in 1962 and moved to Port Charlotte in 1973.
