HYDRAULIC PLATFORMS
Strathclyde inherited a number of Simon SS65, SS85 and an Orbitor. One set of booms were re-chassied onto a Shelvoke and Drewry WY chassis. Then in 1983 a replacement programme was started and Simon SS263 booms were purchased and fitted onto Shelvoke and Drewry WY chassis with crew cabs. Three of these were purchased, then in 1986 a Dodge G16L chassis was purchased with a Scania 92M chassis being purchased for the booms in 1988. The Dodge and Scania chassis did not have a crew cab.
In 1997 a programme of re-chassing the SS263 booms was started, this time using Volvo FL10 chassis the fist of which was on a 6x2 chassis with the next three being on 6x4 chassis. The booms on the E registered Scania chassis have so far not been re-chassied.
With the exception of the Scania which has 'H' jacks all the others had 'A' frame jacks.
The advantage of the Hydraulic Platform is that it has a cage on the end of the booms which can be used as a working platform or in rescues you can get more than one person in the cage, then lower it to the ground and let them step out rather than having to guide them down a ladder. You can also put a casualty onto a stretcher then place the stretcher on the cage and accompany them down reassuring them on the way.
A disadvantage is that if it is not working at full height then it cannot rotate in a confined space.
