BURNTISLAND FIRE BRIGADE

The Town Council of Burntisland desire to engage six men as members of the Fire Brigade. The Fire Master to be appointed will receive a retaining fee of £5 per annum, and the other men £2 per annum, with extra renumeration in cases of fire. Apply M’Intosh & Brown, Town Clerks, Burntisland.

BURNTISLAND
MISCELLANEA

The question of reconstituting Burntisland Fire Brigade was remitted to Committee. Provost Kirke stated that the town ought to have a brigade, and that the firemen ought to be local men and paid for their services.

BURNTISLAND BEACH FIRE

Burntisland Fire Brigade was called out on Thursday night to a fire at the Beach Entertainers Pavilion. The building, which is a wooden structure, is unoccupied and closed up during the winter, and some difficulty was experienced in getting at the seat of the fire, which occurred at the stage end of the building. The fire was over come after half an hour’s work. The origin of the fire is a mystery, as the building has been closed since September last, and stands alone near the Lammerlaws Beach Promenade.

FIRE FIGHTING IN FIFE
Offer by Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline
Assistance to Smaller Burghs

Several of the smaller burghs in Fife are considering an offer by Dunfermline and Kirkcaldy to provide fire services. Should the proposals materialise, Kirkcaldy Town Council will provide a service for Kinghorn, Burntisland, Markinch, Leslie, and Falkland.
At the monthly meeting of Burntisland Town Council last night a letter was submitted from the Town Clerk, Kirkcaldy, stating that Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline Town Councils had had under consideration the question of providing fire services for towns outside the burghs. They had agreed to approach the burghs in their immediate neighbourhoods with a view to ascertaining whether they would be willing to pay an annual retaining fee in respect of the services. The retaining fee for Burntisland would be in the region of £15. It was suggested that a conference might be held.
Dean of Guild MacRae expressed himself as being in entire sympathy with the proposal. He raised the matter of providing the town with more adequate firefighting appliances some years ago, but was unsuccessful.
The proposal, he thought, constituted the next best thing. While the terms might not be altogether acceptable, there was a suggestion to hold a conference, where a suitable financial arrangement might be come to.
In the event of a serious outbreak of fire occurring in Burntisland, and perhaps life being endangered, they had no appliances with which to save life. For these reasons he moved that they attend the conference.
Councillor Drysdale seconded.
In reply to Councillor Penman, the Town Clerk stated that the Burntisland Burgh Fire Brigade, last year cost £45 – £42.11s for the men’s services and £2.18s in respect of maintenance and repairs at the fire station.
The decision to attend the conference was arrived at unanimously, and Provost Leith, Dean of Guild MacRae, and Councillor Penman were appointed to the deputation.

FUTURE OF BURNTISLAND FIRE BRIGADE
Kirkcaldy town Council delay decision

The proposal that Kirkcaldy Town Council should take over the firefighting services in Burntisland has been delayed meantime.
A letter was submitted from Kirkcaldy Town Clerk stating that his Town Council had resolved to delay consideration of the matter until the reorganisation of Kirkcaldy Brigade was completed.
It was expected that the brigade’s new headquarters would be completed about the end of 1935.

BURNTISLAND SCHEMES FOR FIRE BRIGADE

Improved Fire Brigade equipment is to be provided for the needs of Burntisland.
The Town Council has agreed to purchase a medium trailer pump at a cost of about £300 and it is also proposed that the brigade be increased to 12 men.
This scheme supersedes the suggestion that arrangements should be come to for the services of Kirkcaldy Fire Brigade being available for Burntisland. This latter arrangement was deemed to be too costly.
The Council is also to purchase premises in Somerville Street at the price of £550 for accommodation for the fire brigade and A.R.P. services
(The Courier and Advertiser, Wednesday, April 5, 1939. Page 5)

At Burntisland the fire station consisted of temporary premises inside a school kitchen garage.

Burntisland had a call sign of B3 in Fife Fire and Rescue Service, this was changed to N20, the new National Call Sign, when Thornton Control closed on 30/3/2016.

There used to be a Fire Brigade in Burntisland Shipyard.
