NORTHERN AREA FIRE BRIGADE

1948 to 1975

The Northern Area Fire Brigade was formed on the 16th of May 1948 under the Fire Services Act, 1947 which disbanded the National Fire Service and returned control of Fire Brigades back to local authorities under the control of Joint Fire Committees. The Joint Fire Committee consisted of fourteen members made up from :-

In 1948 the Brigade consisted of 1 wholetime station, 15 retained stations and 28 volunteer units, manning:-
1 Pump Escape
1 Water Tender
1 Turntable Ladder
3 Self Propelled Pumps
20 Towing Vehicles
1 Escape Carrying Unit
16 Large Trailer Pumps
16 Light Trailer Pumps
5 Portable Power Pumps
11 of the Volunteer Units had a Standpipe and Hose.

These resources provided the fire cover for the counties of Caithness, Inverness, Orkney, Ross and Cromarty, Sutherland and Zetland, and the Burgh of Inverness.
The Brigade continued until Regionalisaton on 16th May, 1975 when it became the Highlands and Islands Fire Brigade along with six stations from the Western Area Fire Brigade an a few from the North Eastern Area Fire Brigade.
